Flooring estimator

Enter the floor area, your product, and the coverage printed on the box. The estimator returns boxes and individual planks, plus an underlayment guide. Counts use the epsilon safe ceiling BuildTrue applies everywhere. Switch between metric and imperial at any time. Your choice is remembered on this device. All results are estimates only.

Formulas: area with waste = area x (1 + waste / 100). Boxes = ceiling of (area with waste / coverage per box). Plank area = plank length x plank width. Planks = ceiling of (area with waste / plank area). Underlayment guidance stated: about 1 roll per 100 sq ft of area with waste, for products that need separate underlayment. All ceilings are epsilon safe.

Worked example: Area 200 sq ft, waste 10 percent, box coverage 20 sq ft, planks 48 in by 7 in. Area with waste = 200 x 1.10 = 220 sq ft. Boxes = 220 / 20 = 11 boxes exactly. Plank area = 48 x 7 / 144 = 2.33 sq ft. Planks = 220 / 2.33 = 94.29, rounded up to 95 planks. Underlayment = 220 / 100 = 2.2, rounded up to 3 rolls. The metric defaults, 18.580608 sq m of area, 1.8580608 sq m of box coverage, and 1219.2 mm by 177.8 mm planks, are the exact equivalents of the imperial values above, so the defaults reproduce this example in both systems.
Estimates only. Room shape, plank direction, closets, and stairs change real needs. Check the coverage on your box and verify before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I allow for flooring?

Straight plank layouts in square rooms often plan 5 to 10 percent. Diagonal layouts, stairs, and rooms with many angles often plan 10 to 15 percent. Picking a product type above sets a starting allowance you can override.

Why keep one extra box after the job?

Flooring runs change between production lots and get discontinued. One spare box from the same lot makes future repairs match. The estimator reports the purchase count; keeping a spare is your call, not a hidden addition.
