Drywall pack: estimate, check, and order
A complete drywall job in one page for Canadian contractors, renovators, and serious DIY builders. Run the calculator, work the pre-job checklist, fill in the material list in purchasable units, and take the print page to the truck or the supplier counter. All results are estimates.
Standalone calculator: Drywall estimator on the BuildTrue home page. This hub bundles the same math with the job paperwork around it.
Drywall calculator
Enter the net wall and ceiling area to be boarded. If you are deducting doors and windows, deduct them before you enter the area, as in the worked example. This section is a full duplicate of the standalone drywall calculator logic, adapted as a self-contained section for this hub page. See the integration note for the reasoning.
Canada default is metric. Switch at any time: the values on screen convert so the physical size stays the same. Results show both systems.
Formula: sheets = ceiling of (area with waste / sheet area). Screw guide: about 32 screws per 4 x 8 ft sheet and 48 per 4 x 12 ft sheet, about 1 screw per square foot. Joint compound guide: about 1 box (4.5 gallon size) per 400 sq ft of board area. Whole counts use an epsilon safe ceiling.
Pre-job checklist
Site prep
- Confirm framing is complete, straight, and dry, and that any required inspections behind the board are signed off before you hang.
- Check moisture in the space. Board hung into a damp building telegraphs problems through the finish for years.
- Confirm backing is in place for cabinets, grab bars, towel bars, handrails, and wall mounted fixtures.
- Stage sheets flat, off the floor, close to each room, in hanging order, so the crew is not carrying board all day.
- Confirm ceiling strategy first: ceilings before walls, and the lift or crew plan for ceiling sheets agreed before start.
Measurements to confirm
- Each wall length and the ceiling height, room by room. Do not assume two opposite walls match.
- Ceiling area per room, measured separately from wall area.
- Every door and window opening, if you plan to deduct openings from the gross area. Measure each one; do not use a standard guess.
- Sheet size choice per area. Long sheets cut butt joints on long walls; smaller sheets are easier in tight or solo work.
- Waste allowance. Ten percent suits simple rectangles; cut up rooms with many corners argue for more.
Permits and code notes for Canada, general level
- Garage separation, fire separations between units, and certain ceiling assemblies have specific board type and thickness requirements in Canadian codes. Those assemblies are design matters, not estimator choices.
- Work in a home built before modern material bans may encounter older materials that need proper assessment before disturbance. Follow provincial guidance for testing and handling.
- General information only, not code advice. Confirm local code and permit requirements with your municipality and a qualified professional before you build.
Material list template
Drywall material list template. Quantities are in purchasable units. Fill in the quantity column from your calculator result, then confirm your waste allowance before you order.
| Item | Specification or size | Purchasable unit | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drywall sheets | 4 x 8 ft or 4 x 12 ft, thickness as specified | Sheet | ____ | Calculator count includes your waste allowance. Note thickness per area if rooms differ. |
| Drywall screws | Length suited to board thickness and framing | Box or pail, by count or weight as sold | ____ | Calculator guide: about 1 screw per square foot of board area. |
| Joint compound | 4.5 gallon box size used in the calculator guide | Box | ____ | Guide: about 1 box per 400 sq ft of board area. Finish level changes real use. |
| Joint tape | Paper or mesh as your system uses | Roll | ____ | Estimate from total joint length on the layout, not from sheet count alone. |
| Corner bead | Metal, vinyl, or paper faced as specified | Piece, sold by length | ____ | Count outside corners on site, including bulkheads and window returns. |
| Primer and paint | Drywall primer plus finish coats | Can or pail | ____ | Outside this calculator. Measure finished area and confirm coverage on the label. |

Pro tips
- Hang ceilings first, then walls tight to the ceiling. The order hides the ceiling edge joint and gives the wall sheets a clean top line.
- Stagger butt joints and keep them off the centre of the room where light rakes across them. A joint plan on paper beats fixing a layout mid room.
- Check each stud with a long straightedge before hanging. Five minutes of shimming saves an hour of floating a wavy wall flat.
- Keep screws just below the paper surface without tearing the paper. Torn paper around a screw head has almost no holding strength.
- Cut electrical box openings snug and note any box buried by a rushed sheet. Finding a buried box after mud goes on is a miserable hour.
- Photograph each wall before boarding if pipes, wires, or backing locations will matter later. Label the photo with the room and wall.
- Mix only the compound you will use in the session and keep the box covered between pans. Dried lumps in fresh mud become scratches in the finish.
